More Reflections from Italy
An indescribable experience here in Italy. I was so surprised every day, in almost every moment. If I could give you any words of wisdom...bring larger pants.
I loved actually going out to the lab and seeing how it’s all done and getting lots of information from Dr. Joseph.

Everything you need to know as you prepare for your Italian journey.

Once your application has been approved, you’ll receive information about the next steps, including how to secure your place and complete payment arrangements.
Both double-occupancy and single-occupancy pricing options are available. Accommodations and room arrangements will be confirmed as the retreat details are finalized. Please refer to the pricing section for current rates.

Traveling to Italy
Yes. U.S. citizens traveling to Italy must have a passport valid for at least three months beyond their planned departure from the Schengen Area. Your passport must also have been issued within the past 10 years. We recommend checking your passport well in advance of the retreat and renewing it early if necessary.
Travelers holding passports from other countries should verify their specific entry requirements before departure.
The European Union is preparing to introduce ETIAS, a travel authorization system for visitors from certain visa-exempt countries, including the United States.
ETIAS is currently scheduled to launch in late 2026, but the exact start date and requirements for travelers in May 2027 have not yet been finalized.
We recommend checking the official European Union ETIAS website before departure for the latest requirements and application instructions.
Immigration (passport control) will be at first port of arrival in Europe/Italy. Customs is just a walk through the ‘nothing to declare lane’. You will also clear customs upon arrival in the U.S.
Generally there is no need for cash as most places do have access to debit/credit card services. However, it is advisable to have some Euros to buy the occasional coffee, gifts, snacks, etc.
Tipping in Italy is appreciated but generally not expected in the same way it is in the United States. Service charges may already be included in your bill.
For exceptional service, rounding up the bill or leaving a small additional amount is a thoughtful gesture, but tipping is entirely optional.
May is a beautiful time to visit Italy, but temperatures can vary between northern and southern regions. We recommend comfortable layers, a light jacket or sweater, rain protection, and sturdy walking shoes.
Northern Italy and mountain areas may be cooler, while southern Italy is generally warmer. Packing versatile clothing will help you stay comfortable throughout the journey.
Baggage allowances and fees vary depending on the airline and ticket type. Some European airlines charge separately for checked luggage and larger carry-on bags.
We recommend packing lightly and checking the baggage requirements for each flight, particularly any connecting or regional flights within Italy.
Wi-Fi is commonly available in hotels, restaurants, and many public spaces throughout Italy.
Before departing, check with your mobile carrier about international coverage and data plans. An international roaming plan or travel eSIM can help you stay connected while exploring.
Yes. Italy uses different electrical outlets than the United States, so you’ll need a European travel plug adapter. Italy primarily uses Type C, F, and L outlets, with electricity supplied at 230 volts.
Most modern phones, tablets, and laptops support dual voltage, but always check your device specifications. A plug adapter does not convert voltage, so certain appliances, such as hair dryers, may require a voltage converter.
English is commonly spoken in many tourist areas of Italy, although learning a few basic Italian phrases can make your experience even more enjoyable.
We’ll share details about group communication and staying in touch with fellow travelers as the retreat approaches.
